Hempel (1894–1986).
Hempel was a successful businessman with a deep passion for glass art. On his many travels abroad, he explored and collected numerous rare, antique, and curious glass objects, which eventually became Northern Europe’s largest private glass collection.

J.C. Hempel envisioned the museum as a cultural center—home to art exhibitions and cultural events that would bring life and creativity to the Odsherred region. His first contribution was his extensive collection of historic glass.

The museum was built on a hilltop offering stunning views over Nykøbing Bay and the Isefjord, directly across from Hempel’s estate, Annebjerggaard Manor, which lent its name to both the cultural center and the surrounding area.

To make his vision a reality, Hempel founded the Hempel Cultural Foundation and donated his glass collection to it. The foundation was tasked with building and running the museum—a role it still holds today.

The museum opened its doors in July 1965.

Today, the museum continues to pursue J.C. Hempel’s original vision: to be a vibrant and attractive cultural institution not only for Odsherred, but for all of Denmark. With permanent and temporary exhibitions, a dynamic cultural program, museum shop, café, activities, and more, the museum is a thriving hub of creativity and community.

In 2022, the museum unveiled a brand-new exhibition design, primarily for the permanent displays. With the current—and much more extensive—renovation, J.C. Hempel’s original dream is finally becoming a full reality.

["post-528","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
