Maria Bang Espersen receives the Hempels Glaspris 2024
Maria Bang Espersen receives the prize for her ability and desire to challenge herself and the glass, and for her craftsmanship, technical and artistic dedication, which contributes strongly to the development of modern glass art.
She describes her work with glass as playful and immediate. She creates her works in warm glass, which she stretches and folds, so that it appears soft and light and with a candy-like expression. Maria Bang Espersen challenges traditional glass techniques and likes to develop new approaches to design and to the material, in order to discover the personality of the glass.
Maria Bang Espersen (b. 1981, DK) is a Danish-Swedish artist who lives and works in Småland, Sweden. She has a Master of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts and a craftsman education from the Royal Danish Design Academy. For the past 10 years, she has exhibited in both the USA, England, Japan, Denmark and Finland.
This year’s recipient of the Hempel Glass Prize can be seen in a special exhibition at the Hempel Glass Museum, when we reopens after a major renovation and modernisation.
The museum is also buying a work from the artist, which will be part of the museum’s permanent collection of modern Danish glass art.
