Renovation
Hempel Glasmuseum is closed due to renovation
With a large donation from the Hempel Foundation the museum is facing a thorough renovation and modernization of the entire building. This is a further developing of the vision of the museum as a relevant, cultural and inclusive meeting place, which, based on the glass collections and the cultural history of glass, inspiring architectural frameworks and scenic surroundings, provides new perspectives and creates a framework for communities.
The reconstruction of the building includes that the 1st floor is going to be heated, so that it will be possible to extend the opening season to also extend over the colder months. In Atriumgården, the leaky glass roof is replaced with a fixed roof that follows the ridge of the original part of the building. The tower, pillars and non-load-bearing walls are replaced by flexible walls that allow the high-ceilinged space to be adapted to larger, changing exhibitions. In addition, the entrances and functions will be rearranged so that the house’s square meters are used better and so that there will be one maine entrance to both museum, shop and café.
Two stairs and a new elevator connect the two floors. In the museum’s lower floor, there will be space for a common entrance to the museum and cafe, museum shop, cloakroom and an area dedicated to communication and experiences for children and their families. The café will also be modernized and more square meters will be added, which will give a better opportunity to enjoy the beautiful view of the Isefjord.
Overall, the renovation will contribute to an even clearer realization of J. C. Hempel’s original wish to create a local meeting place in Odsherred with high ceilings. The renovation means that the Hempel Glass Museum is closed for an extended period. Follow the development of our new museum on our profiles on Facebook and Instagram.
